It All Has to Start Somewhere

This very night, at 6pm, 7 book-lovers met at McAllisters for the 1st official meeting of The Three Bag Book Club! Everyone was in fine Friday night spirits (I say Spirits because #1, this is a literary club and theatrics and lots of laughter were involved #2, today is after all part of the Day of the Dead celebration, and I brought my sugar skull.) We all ate some dinner and got down to the business of picking out books to share with the others. I had a paper bag, so we tore off sheets of paper from Jennifer's notebook and discussed some of our favorite books, placing each offering into the bag, to choose one at random. If there were suggestions several people didn't care for, we would toss the book out. So far, we have 9 (and a homework assignment to pick out more):
Ender's Game,
Neuromancer,
Wicked,
Sabriel,
Hollow Earth,
Ready Player One,
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,
The Martian Chronicles,
and Fahrenheit 451
Of these, everyone thought it would be cool to get the club started with Ender's Game, because after we read it, we could all go see the movie together... and taunt/critique it...

We decided that we would meet the first Tuesday of each month or thereabouts - unless there is a major scheduling conflict, giving everyone a month to read the book selected. 6pm for the time seemed to work for everyone. Then we tried to figure out where to meet. Folks tossed out some quiet locally owned places to eat and Judy offered her place (she has kitty-kats though... and i am really allergic.) We landed on the the idea to all write down places, and put them in a second bag, and select them at random just like the books.

Lastly, we discussed what to talk about when we review each book. We said we could just chat, or have questions lined up. The majority liked the idea of a free-flowing conversation, with questions that each of us has thought about, tossed into a third paper bag, to be used when we get stuck or run out of discussion. The bag thing was kinda catchy. We reviewed what went into each bag and no sooner had that been said, Steph spoke up and said with a laugh... its the Three Bag Book Club. We all loved it!

Henceforth... we are The Three Bag Book Club!
